KC’s Benton Community Garden

In 2012, Historic Green undertook an ambitious plan to create a new community garden on two vacant lots in Kansas City’s Santa Fe Neighborhood. Beginning w/ a design competition to create the space, HG created a private-public partnership to help fund construction of the site & its materials. Partners included the City of Kansas City, MO, USGBC-Central Plains & BRR Architecture. Over the course of several months, HG & its partners constructed raised-beds for gardening, a fruit orchard, a rain garden & a unique rainwater structure & underground cistern w/ pump since the site lacked access to city water. The Benton Community Garden remains a vital fixture in the community to this day.
