Building for the Bees

In September 2022, Historic Green undertook its first new project in more than two years - to design and construct a walkway through a pollinator garden for MO Hives KC. MO Hives, led by Dr. Marion Pierson, has been converting six empty lots in Kansas City’s historic Blue Hills Neighborhood into a community space for area residents. The site includes raised vegetable beds for gardeners, a ‘micro forest’, a stage for educational events - and working beehives to produce honey and demonstrate the power of making food within an urban setting. Also featured is a new ‘pollinator garden’ filled with native flowers and a source of pollen for the bees.

Similar to many urban garden/green infrastructure spaces Historic Green has assisted in the past, we tapped a local architecture/landscape architecture firm (GMLV) for a creative design for a walkway and suspension bridge so that visitors to MO Hives KC could experience the pollinator garden up close. Thanks to a group of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) volunteers from University of Kansas, we broke ground on the walkway/bridge in September 2022.

Once a final design is ready and materials ordered, we’ll start construction in Spring of 2023. Stay tuned!
