Spring Greening 2024

We gathered again in New Orleans’ Holy Cross Neighborhood & the Lower Ninth Ward for our 15th year supporting this still-recovering community. Our volunteer workforce: Engineers Without Borders (EWB) from the University of Kansas, Wichita State University & Kansas State. Our partners: the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association, Backyard Gardeners Network, the Lower 9 Center for Sustainable Engagement & Development (CSED) & Greater Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Our leaders: John Koeferl, carpenter Dan Ake & Sharla Riead of the Energy Smart Institute.

A full week of projects included: restoring the sunshade/arbor structure @ the Guerrilla Garden (pictured), a design-build effort we undertook in our early days; continued window restoration for a resident’s historic shotgun house; ongoing maintenance & repairs for the Delery Street Playground; & sealing the backyard deck @ CSED’s headquarters.

We rounded out the week w/ amazing hot meals for every lunch, tours of the Lower Ninth Ward & even the treat of sno-balls from Ms. Deborah. Thanks also to Reverend Gilbert Scie for once again hosting us!

Thanks to all of our volunteers, project leaders & community partners for another great year.
